The first atheist church in the United States is set to open its doors next month in New York City. The Dawkins House of Enlightenment is the first official religious order that staunchly opposes the idea of a higher power.
The church has a published mission statement that widely touts the desire to spread the truth of the non-existence of any god throughout the world. All of the churches stated charitable causes are aimed at the expression of what they have deemed “scientific truths.”
The drastically “evangelistic” nature of this new church has many worried. The early members of this church seem to push their atheist values onto others with an almost militant textbook-thumping fervor.
The Atheist Scriptures
The entirety of this church’s doctrine is based upon the “Intelligently-Inspired” writings of seven men. Among their approved cannon are:
- The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins
- Breaking the Spell by Daniel Dennett
- Letter to a Christian Nation and The End of Faith by Sam Harris
- On the Origin of Species by Charles Darwin
These approved works are believed to be written by men of such admirable intellectual ability and clarity of thought that they are the undisputed truth. Each atheist is encouraged to study the works and strive to achieve intellectual might like their holy authors.
Tenets of Atheism as a Religion
The main belief of atheists is that all other religions are simply silly fairy tales about invisible wizards in the sky. Instead, each atheist blindly believes the arguments of other men that stand in places of authority academically.
Any criticisms of these works, whether philosophical or scientific, are considered to be the fanatical ramblings of a lesser mind.
Outreach ministries from this church focus on providing scientific literature to youth as a means to spread their beliefs. Charitable causes like helping the poor are seen as counter-intuitive to the natural order of life. The weak will die, while the strong survive.
How to get involved
If you’re curious, and want to become involved with this interesting new church, then visit any of the upcoming services. Newcomers are always welcome.
According to their site, newcomers should expect a musical expression of disbelief, and a liturgical lecture about how their old beliefs are wrong. They will even learn how knowing the right truths can make them a better person than those other religious barbarians.
